On Noticing

Editorial team · Updated August 2026 · Reading time 6 min

An argument, not a list: most men in their forties are either worrying about the wrong thing or not worrying at all, and there is a sensible position between the two.

The Two Common Mistakes

The first is treating every tired week as evidence of decline. The second is treating a year of tired weeks as nothing at all. Both are understandable, and both make it harder to see the thing that actually matters, which is the direction of travel over months rather than the state of any given Tuesday.

Anxiety and dismissal look like opposites but they fail the same way: neither produces a record, and without a record there is nothing to compare.

Why The Boring Habits Get Skipped

Sleep timing, movement and alcohol do not make interesting reading. Nobody sells them hard, they photograph badly, and they ask for months rather than weeks. They are also, inconveniently, the part of the field with the least controversial evidence behind it.

Anything that promises to skip them is asking you to spend attention on a smaller variable while the larger one goes unexamined.

What A Middle Position Looks Like In Practice

It is unremarkable: write four things down each day for a fortnight, change the two habits you are worst at, and take the notes to someone qualified if the pattern holds.

That is the whole method. It is not exciting, which is probably why it needs an essay to defend it.

The Difference Between A Bad Month And A Direction

Every year contains a bad month, and most bad months have a cause that is obvious in hindsight: a deadline, an illness, a stretch of travel, a family situation. Read on its own, a bad month is indistinguishable from a decline. Read against the eleven months around it, it usually is not.

This is the entire practical argument for a record. It is not that memory is dishonest, but that it has no denominator: it can tell you that last week was poor and cannot tell you how many of the previous forty were.

A direction is something that survives the explanation. If the pattern outlasts the deadline, the illness and the trip, it has stopped being a bad month.

Common Questions

Is this page trying to sell me something?

It is sponsored content and there is a link to a third-party presentation below, which we may be compensated for. The page itself sells nothing and claims nothing about any product.

Why no specific numbers?

Because the honest answer varies by person, and a page that invented a threshold would be more confident than the evidence allows.

Does age alone explain it?

Rarely on its own. Age is one factor among several, and the others are more open to being changed.

What if I have already changed the habits?

Then the notes are still worth taking, because they turn a vague appointment into a specific one.

The Longer Version

If this is the sort of thing you want more of, the next page is a video presentation from an independent publisher — about forty minutes, and considerably more detailed than an essay.
